Calla Lily Vendor
Recalling similar paintings in Rivera’s catalogue, Calla Lily Vendor centers around an anonymous nude woman kneeling on the ground. We are denied access to her face as she leans in towards the large bunch of lillies in the corner. “The Indian girl, kneeling before her pile of calla lilies—a flower associated with funerals and death—constitutes an ode at once to the beauty of Mexico’s native cultures and to the suffering of her native peoples.”
